Jesmond High School has a long and diverse musical heritage which lasts to the present day within the student body of Callaghan College. It can be defined as being a period that encouraged creativity and leadership, and developed an environment that allowed individuals' musical talents and appreciation to grow.
This history covers the forty three (43) years of Jesmond Secondary School, opening in 1957, changing names in 1960 to Jesmond High School, 1996 to Jesmond University High School through to 2000. The student body and curriculum were growing, the first dedicated music teacher was appointed in 1962, increasing to two permanent staff by the and from a humble start with the choir, the teachers and pupils developed diverse activities to include a brass band, musical productions and variety performances that showcased the talent of individuals and group musicians/performers.
It was a homogeneous evolution and not always planned. The syllabus provided the base and individual staff interest, skills and enthusiasm appear to have influenced this story, and the environment, technology and fashion culminated exciting years of diversity. Music was integrated into CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) in 1987.
There are three (3) distinct streams in this evolution; the choir and choral groups are constant throughout; the brass band and then the musical productions (big stage shows) were highlights; however, individuals and groups were active depending on musical trends or syllabus requirements and all contributed to the rich history and diversity of the school. The ethos was to support the development of a love of music and support of the community, both within and outside.
The teachers, not always in the music department, are the vanguards and unsung champions who helped create this history.
